Teach Before You Test
each
time a teacher wants to test students s/he should ask himself/herself “did I
teach the students this or the strategy to solve such exam or activity”. This
is a huge problem that many teachers fall in; we assume that students should
know things without really finding out if they know them! I as teacher should
teach my students listening skills, reading skills, speaking skills, writing
skills, exam taking skills, group or pair working skills and many other skills
before I test them! These skills are not innate for the students to have by
their own, but they are acquired and we are the ones who are supposed to teach
them such skills. Whenever we teach a skill, we should assess that particular
skill by formative and summative assessment and take into consideration the
results of those assessments as feedback for the teacher; if he/s/he met his/her
objectives or not, and if not then what should be done to get the desired
results. Such step is vital for the process of the teacher progress and
development.

And we need to create and provide opportunities for students to do their own testing, and to check how things work in practical contexts. After providing chances for students to apply what they learn, we can test them. Also, things are not always teaching then a final testing; there can be an on-going testing or assessment that allows us to see students' progress and to provide extra help where things are lacking.
What you talk about it, is a very important point that many teachers do it wrong, such as they don’t emphasize what they taught, they teach something and test the students in other thing that what make the test invalid and unethical. And also what is more important is to make sure if the students achieved the learning targets that you assessing for.
"We plan, then we teach and finally we assess". A very important statement we as teachers should follow. We shouldn't test students in things that we didn't mention in our teaching. That is our tests and assessments should match our teaching. Assessing students through several ways such as: questioning them, asking them to give examples, making small quizzes... provide teachers with feedbacks about if the students understand the activities and meet the objectives or not.
it is very important point that we cant surprise our students in making an exam about something that we didn't taught it before, its not professional. Also we must think that our test have to be assessed and it will not be fair to assess students with giving them a chance to study or to know by what they are going to be assessed..
Another point is that we must give feedback before we test, its our job as a teachers..cause without feedback then students will not have a chance to apply what they learn in their exams.
Information should be given for the sake of learning it, which is achieved by intrinsic motivation. Teachers should teach their students how to benefit from the knowledge they are learning and be able to apply it in real life situations.
